LOCATION: MILL HILL, LONDON

With unparalleled views across central London, the Taylor Wimpey Millbrook Park development in Mill Hill has created a thriving and sustainable community in the heart of NW7 that comprises over two thousand new homes and various public facilities. Our brief was for a new-build temporary structure and due to its elevated position within the site the decision was taken to increase its presence by raising it to two floors in order to take full advantage of the site constraints and in doing so we were able to create a sophisticated and visually stunning building.

We chose to use a hybrid construction system of Glulam frame with SIPS panel walls and roof which in itself is able to provide a high level of sustainability by achieving a reduced construction programme due to most elements being able to be constructed off-site prior to installation. The site determined that a large amount of glazing should be used in order to maximise the views across London which would traditionally lower the thermal performance of the building. In order to overcome this we specified a glass with high reflectivity and improved thermal performance which could therefore retain heat within the building in colder months and lower heat penetration in summer.

We believe that we have successfully designed a building that has both great aesthetics and environmental qualities which has been affirmed by the recent shortlist for the Alan King Award 2016.
